Summer

Today's summer post comes from Molly from Wild Spring Rose.

We are well into the festival season, and I am a painfully long 27 days away from my own festival road trip up the east coast for Newport Folk Fest. The best part of festivals (besides the music of course) is the style you get to see there.

Obsessed: JNELV

I don't understand why the whole world doesn't know about Jaennelle Vergonio. Actually I don't know why they aren't obsessed with Jaenelle (better known as JNELV). She has flowing, dark locks, warm mocha skin, a petite frame and wears statement T-shirts like no one's business. Jaennelle has a flair for making masculine items feminine and cute and making really girly stuff edgy and being very photogenic. She dresses urban better than most people breathe.

Evening Looks for Summer

It's getting really difficult to think of songs with summer in the lyrics. All that comes to me are High School Musical 2 clips, that beautiful song by the Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff (why don't they make music anymore?) 'Summertime' and the title of that awful, awful "album" with, like, twenty five "rappers" and Kanye West; Cruel Summer. But here is Sophia Styles from A Stylish Hue.

After a long hot day in the sun ignite your evening style in such a way that you have no choice but to light up a room. Read More here.

What Time Is It? SUMMERTIME!

Cayli from Nightchayde  shares her tips on keeping cool!

For those of you who live in really hot places, dresses comfortable but cool is the only way to go. Here it has been so hot and dry. So the best way to keep cool is shorts, skirts, and dresses. A light skirt is so breezy on a hot day. Flowly loose fabrics and cool colors. Underneath are some examples on outfits to stay cool. :) Read more here.

It's Our Party We Can Love Who We Want

This is our house,
This is our rules.
And we can't stop.
And we won't stop.
Can't you see it's we who own the night?
Can't you see it's we who 'bout that life?
And we can't stop.
And we won't stop.
We run things,
Things don't run we.

At the risk of major fan girling here how freaking fantastically absolutely positively mind-blowingly wonderfully amazing is Miley Cyrus's music video for We Can't Stop? The song itself was already amazing (as Miley's anthem-songs are, remember Party In the USA? Me and friends tried to a capella it a la Pitch Perfect) but the music video is insane. I can't stop replaying it. And each time I watch it I fall in love with a little more and then I fall in love with the idea of falling in love with it and I have to keep watching it and twerking (really badly, might I add).

I mean, to be young and beautiful and so gangsta! I want to go to a party like this. I want to live a party like this. Let's have a thousand EOS lip balms and put exploding stuff between our legs and, yes, we should cut off our fingers and bleed pink goop. 'Cause we're gonna go all night, until we see the sunrise.
I'm not even concerned that Miley's popping mollies (I'm sweating, woo!) or enjoying that snow in the bathroom -- I ain't her mama! I just want a teddy bear strapped to my back, platform sneakers and twerk soup. And where is my Miley doll? I need to make out with it!

It's our party we can do what WE WANT TO!
It's our house we can love who WE WANT TO!
It's our song we can sing if WE WANT TO!
It's my mouth I can say what I WANT TO!

In a word this music video is so perfect. From Miley's all white ensembles, the sunglasses, even the bedspread she's frolicking around on. And the taxidermy! So sick. And there's even some poetic stuff there. Like the dude eating the money sandwich and the guy rolling around in white bread (which is my dream and worst nightmare, read: constipation).

We run things, things don't run we. Don't take nothing from nobody!

Khenzo xx

When It Gets Loud, I Turn it Up

Leopard spots, polka dots, zebra stripes, light florals and Aztec prints. Prints are bigger than ever this June/July and I couldn't be happier. I know everything thinks that when you have really loud (sometimes borderline obnoxious) prints they have to be the star of the show but move aside paisley print-- you have to share the spotlight with even more graphic prints, tie-dye and bold colours.
1) Polka Dot: a classic! You can do no wrong with them but instead of going the route of being super girly with a circle, lilac polka dot dress by pairing it with some bows and pastel shoes and cupcakes. Why not make things edgier with some bad biatch shoes, heavy accessories and a beanie with everyone's third favourite year on it?
2) Aztec/Tribal Prints: are also love. I know everyone already wears them in shorts but they're amazing. And you can find similar versions of that TopShop bag at Cotton On, Edgars and Factorie.
3) Jewel/Scarf Print: One of the most glamourous prints. No one did it like Dolce and Gabana last year and I'm so excited that they're making a comeback. There's a really lovely jewel print skater skirt from Mr Price that I can't wait to get a hold of.
4) I was planning to show some ordinary leopard print but then I saw these graffiti leggings and had a vision. A vision of the future. There's a lot of turquoise and pink in the leggings so I matched that in the top, shoes and really cool sunglasses.

And, now, for the two biggest prints this summer:
Vertical, horizontal, diagonal, monochromatic, rainbow. Who doesn't love a good stripe? Or several. The best thing about stripes is that there are no limits to what you can pair with stripes. Do be careful, though, about horizontal stripes as they're fattening.

Florals, florals, florals. In the winter you saw the rise of the dark floral and now in the summer time I've completely abandoned that. White is also a really hot colour right now!

Summer, summer, summertime

So I know it's not technically "summer" down here in the southern hizzy-hemisphere (that was me trying to be 'hip') but if you actually live down here you know it feels exactly like summer - sometimes hotter than the summer.
I'm collaborating with a couple of other bloggers to do a series of posts on summer style. So be a babe and check out Alea from My Style Daily.

Summer style at work can sometimes be a challenge. The weather warm out and you want to be comfortable, but not reveal too much skin. One of the best ways to achieve comfort and style during the summer at work is by wearing a dress.

[Outfit Post] Come and Get It

I don't think it's entirely appropriate to call June in South Africa winter. If January wasn't so long ago I'd say that it was much hotter than the summer. But what I do love about winter is how clear and beautiful the sky is. It's just this earnest, cloudless blue that goes on forever and ever.

I dug up this red plaid skirt that I've had since, like, grade five but I bought it in a size too big back then so now it fits almost like a glove. The zipper tends to undo itself after a while which is really annoying but it's a really cute skirt. If only I had it in every colour. Except orange of course.

Mr Price black and white knit, purple and black socks from Ackerman's, Mr Price suede brogues and Mr Price bangles

I figured plaid was appropriate since today is Youth Day (freedom is coming tomorroooooooow! Not really but I love that song).

Yours,
Khenzo xx
