Museum of African Design is Chilli Cheese, Yo'

Museum of African Design Maboneng

Ah, even more reason to want to dive into Johannesburg's urban underbelly (except it's more the toned rib-cage-revealing-hip-bones-poking-out-never-gets-bloated-even-after-ciabatta-and-churros belly of the hipsters that frequent there): the Museum of African Design, lads and lasses.

I'm on a bit of a misson to culture myself and extract myself and my thinking from the closed off, manicured lawn, wrought iron fence suburbia I've lived in all my life. So that means less malls and more thrift stores, instead of Walnut Grove on Sundays there's Good Food Markets, museums, independent book stores - that kind of thing. And I just feel that before I can dream about Long Street or West Village, I should know my own city like the back of my hand, you know?

Which brought me to the very recently (as in Friday, the 25th, yo) launched Museum of African Design (MOAD) in, obviously, the Maboneng Precinct. Maboneng is definitely the direction in which everyone in the creative field is looking to right now. It's this evolving place filled with artisans and designers, up and coming inovators and independent thinkers.

The current exhibition, that will be running until the 3rd of November, is by the Southern Guild which features "over 200 works from over 100 South Africa's leading designers and artists" that will "provide a detailed and contextualised view point on collecatable, limited edition design."

Also, the museum building is actually an old factory that was built in the 1920s and it's basically been made to look like a construction site which is so fitting considering I think that's where South African design is in. Do make sure to visit.
